Galjoen to Goldsaddle Goatfish

Galjoen

Galjoen B.F.4kg
South Africas national fish and endemic to southern african coastal waters. Frequents rocky points in the white water. Lying hidden on the bottom will attract this fish to dart in and have a look. Though the flesh is supposed to make excellent eating, it is an aquired taste. I have tried it twice and did not like it.

Garrick

Garrick
The garrick is a winter visitor to the Natal coast and migrates as far north as Sodwana Bay. They start to appear in may with the run peaking in july. They are hunted on rocky points, Ifafa and Pumula being two well known spots. They hunt in and just behind the surf zone. Normally inquisitive, they are fairly easy to shoot although don`t be too choosy and end up with nothing. Once you have found the line they are taking, stay on that line as the other fish will probably be following the same route.

Geelbek

Geelbek
Each year Geelbek migrate into Natal waters during the winter months, June to October, in large shoals numbering 100`s of fish strong. They are actively hunted by dolphins and sharks and for this reason are pretty skittish. Most fish are shot by backline hunters ambushing the shoals on rocky points, before the fish move out into undiveable depths to spawn. You can normally hear a big shoal approaching when you are lying on the bottom as they swim in a tight pack of fish.

German B.F. 2kg

Photo to come
The german is easily confused with the bronze bream as they are similar in appearance. The german has molars and a single row of incisors, where the bronze bream has 5 rows of incisors and no molars. The german also has scales on the gill cover. They are found on deeper reefs and should be approached in the same manner as the bronze bream.

Blacksaddle Goatfish

Goatfish(black saddle)
These fish are found from the shallows to deeper reefs. They do not grow very big but make excellent eating and are shot for the pot by some divers. They are fairly easy to approach.

Goldsaddle Goatfish

Goatfish(gold saddle)
As for the black saddle, they make excellent eating and are shot for the pot.
